How I Spent My Winter
I'm back. Did you miss me?
It's been about three months since my last blog. I'd like to say I've been spending the winter in Maui playing golf, but I've been at home in Edmonton toughing it out through the coldest February in 40 years. Spring is here though and it's time to get back to blog writing There's been lots going on that I wished I had been able to comment on (hello Justin Trudeau and the SNC-Lavalin scandal).
I have been busy though. New videos, a renovated website, new photos, and most importantly, a slight shift in my business focus. Here's how I spent my winter.
A Quick Review
Let’s go back to last December. Just before Christmas I said I was writing my last blog, (for awhile at least) and planned to come back with something in March. It may not be the same blog as I had written before, but I would be back.
A lot has happened since then.
My goal in 2019 is to expand my speaking business, while continuing to do a ton of media training. In order to get speaking opportunities, I needed to do more direct marketing to the people who hire speakers for conferences and other events. I’ve been doing that and am happy to report I already have several speaking engagements booked.
Changes
I also needed to make changes to my website to reflect the two lines of business – media training and keynote presentations. Mediashaker has done my website since I started in business 11 years ago and I worked with designer Daniel To on an extensive website renovation. Some of the site didn’t change, but most did. It was relaunched last week. If you haven’t seen it already, take a look.
As you’ll see there are some new videos on the site. The videos work to both add some sparkle to the website and also help me market directly to the people who book speakers for their conferences.
The videos were created by David Papp and his team at Mtek Digital. This is the video on the main page of my website.
Doing Good Work
Three months have gone by since the last blog. In that time my website has been redesigned and new videos have been added to the main page of the site, along with Media Training and Keynote Presentations. I also shot a series of videos at Mtek Digital in late January. They’ve been edited and you can find them on my YouTube page. There’s lots of great information on the media, social media and communications.
I’ve also reached out directly to the people who book speakers for many conferences across Canada and will start speaking at some of them this spring. It’s been a lot of work, especially since my other media training and consulting work hasn’t stopped.
That’s why I took a break form the blog. I knew I needed to let something go to allow me to have some time to do everything else.
This week I launched a YouTube campaign to promote the speaking side of the business. More work, but I learned how to set up and run a YouTube campaign and I always enjoy learning new digital skills. I wish I was as eager to learn 40 years ago.
With all that done, I’ll be able to get back to the blog. I may not have one every week, depending on my schedule, but I’ll be back with thoughts on the media, social media and communications. As I mentioned just before Christmas, blogging takes a lot of time – more time that most readers suspect and I plan to find ways to deliver good content, but not take as much time doing it.
Thanks for waiting around for me.
